By using a 12 layer system, Message Defence screens each inbound message for:

  Intent Analysis:
Spam Email is sent for a purpose - an intent. This could be to get a user to reply to the Email, visit a website or call a phone number. Message Defence researches Email addresses, web links and phone numbers embedded in Email to determine whether or not they are associated with legitimate sources. It is the Intent Analysis layer that is most likely to catch and stop Phishing Emails.
  Rate Control:
Automated Spam software can be used to bombard a single Email server with flood based attacks. Message Defence actively counts incoming connections from a particular IP address, and bars connections from an address when a defined threshold is exceeded. For those who require mail regularly coming in from the same IP, it is possible to add these relays and mail servers to the Rate Control exemption list, ensuring the Email will be delivered.
  IP Reputation Analysis:
After Rate Controls are applied, Message Defence then analyses and compares the senders IP address through different policies (Customer defined allowed IP addresses, Customer defined blocked IP addresses, Message Defence reputation and external block lists) ,ensuring only legitimate Email is delivered.
  Sender Authentication:
To prevent spoofing, Message Defence uses intelligent verification algorithms to ensure Emails are from who they say they are from by enforcing RFC 821 compliance or fully qualified domain names. We also use a DNS lookup tool to prevent spammers faking a 'From' address.
  Denial of Service (DoS) and Security Protection:
Message Defence is structured around a robust, hardened and secure operating system that intercepts and neutralises threats before they even reach your Email server.
  Recipient Verification:
Spammers often harvest Email addresses to send unsolicited Email to. Message Defence verifies the validity of recipient Email addresses through multiple techniques to make sure non-spam Email is delivered where and when it should be.
  Spam Fingerprint Check:
A fingerprint is used to identify - and a spam fingerprint is no different. By continually learning what constitutes a spam Email, Message Defence can spot the fingerprints of unsolicited messages and block them. New spam fingerprints are continually updated through Message Defence, ensuring the latest protection around the clock.
  Virus Check:
The Message Defence virus checking layer takes priority over the other message scanning techniques. As 87% of viruses are transmitted through Email, Message Defence will virus check each and every Email passing through it, even those from IP's and domains on safe lists to ensure any possible threat is stopped, blocked and eliminated.
  Bayesian Analysis:
Bayesian analysis is a linguistic algorithm that profiles language and compares words and phrases in received mail (both spam and legitimate) in order to learn what users consider to be spam. As a result, the system is continually learning and identifying new kinds of threat for future defence.
  Image Analysis:
Image Spam constitutes about a third of all internet traffic. Fingerprint analysis can catch a significant number of sent spam images. Message Defence goes one step further with actual analysis of transmitted images with optical character recognition (OCR) which can 'read' text embedded in to an image in order to determine if it is spam or not. Spammers trying to fool and get round OCR through speckling, shading or colour manipulation are foiled too with Message Defence's lightweight image processing technologies to 'normalise' the image before the OCR stage. In addition, the Image Analysis layer can also analyse animated .gifs for suspect content.
  Policy (User specified rules):
Message Defence rapidly learns on a user by user basis as to what constitutes as spam. This means protection is tailored to the individual and messages critical to them will not be blocked by general rules of spam identification.
  Rule Based Scoring:
By using a sophisticated scoring engine that weighs multiple factors and multiple rules, the Message Defence Spam Firewall is a lot stronger, intelligent and better at identifying spam than a single filter or absolute block. Scoring systems also mean as the rules of spam change, our spam firewall will update and recognise new threats as they appear, ensuring minimal maintenance with no failing in security.
